HESSTON TO EUREKA, KS 10/3/10

Cassoday Motorcycle Rally! Life is good.

This was the most perfect place for lunch. Bikers, American flags, frito chili pie. Best biker T-shirt so far, "IF YOU CAN READ THIS, THE BITCH FELL OFF."

You'll have to guess what business PRAIRIE POTS is in.

Today's ride from Hesston to Eureka first brought us through the railroad town of Newton,KS. Mary was channeling Richard and Helen Wiens, who are former residents of Newton. Nancy's grandparents also hailed from Newton. After yesterday's wind fury, today's gentle zephyr was appreciated. We also finally saw LIVING wildlife on today's route - two deer crossed the road in front of us and Jim saw a coyote moving at mach I and Margi saw a turtle (and heard the coyote).

Still, the highlight of today's ride was the "Biker Rally" we happened upon in Cassoday. This is a one-Sunday-a-month event that draws thousands of motorcyclists from around the area. We were warmly welcomed by our "biker brothers" despite the contrast of our spandex shorts and screaming yellow jackets with their black leather jackets and chaps. We feasted on Frito-chili pie and homemade cinnamon rolls. Margi even charmed her way into a custom made grilled cheese sandwich.

We have pedaled our way into the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas. Today's ride was a "9 plus" with gently rolling terrain, good roads, cool temperatures, and light wind.

Tomorrow we are eager to bike into Chanute, where friends and family will begin to gather. The next two days will be our closest to Kansas City and we look forward to seeing all of you that are gracious enough to drive down and join us.

  1. Wish I could be there for the gathering of family and friends in Chanute. There used to be a really good barbeque place in Chanute called Rosalee's or something like that, but likely they aren't there any more. I'm sure that there will be lots of food, fun, and loud talking when everyone gets together. That's what our family does best.

Enjoy the F&F gathering. Is kind of like the Sunday family day that we used to go to at Camp Osceola? Perhaps someone will bring fried chicken!
